Foreign Policy: China's Good Leap Forward

Last Saturday, China's government announced a five-year plan to get their country on track to become a "moderately prosperous society." Scott Kennedy and Wang Qun of Foreign Policy argue that although there will be lofty challenges in meeting the goals set out by the plan, there is reason to believe that this is a healthy leap forward for China.

My share of the collective guilt (Unqualified Offerings)

By Thoreau People who want to be considered respectable, patriotic, and peaceful citizens cannot hide their heads in the sand when members of their ethnic and religious group support terrorism. They have a responsibility to take a stand. As a Catholic who is part Irish, I therefore promise to pimp slap IRA supporter Peter [...]

Walker Signs Bill On State Unions; More Protests Planned

Obama's Long Nose On Energy (Powerlineblog.com)

(John) President Obama gave a press conference today, mostly on the subject of energy. To hear him tell it, his administration's motto is drill, baby, drill! > First, we need to continue to boost domestic production of oil and gas. > > Last year, American oil production reached its highest level since 2003. Let me repeat that: Our oil production reached its highest level in seven years. Oil production from federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico reached an all-time high. For the first time in more than a decade, imports accounted for less than half of what we consumed. > > So any notion that my administration has shut down oil production might make for a good political soundbite, but it doesn't match up with reality. Has the Obama administration really been a golden age for the oil business? Obama looked backward at oil production, but how about the fact that his administration has refused to allow Gulf oil production to proceed, so that platforms are now being dismantled and shipped to other parts of the world, from which they will not return? No mention of that. And, of course, Obama isn't proposing the development of any major new petroleum ...

Foreign Policy: Revolutions Won't Hit Saudi Arabia

Protests erupted in Saudi Arabia today, though police are busy preventing them with roadblocks and checkpoints. But Nawaf Obaid of Foreign Policy argues that, contrary to what you may have heard, Saudi Arabia is hardly ripe for revolution, since the country has many assets and programs that other Arab nations do not.
