Rising Gas Prices Spur Calls For U.S. Oil Production

Republicans accuse the Obama administration of deliberately curtailing domestic oil production. But the White House notes domestic production last year rose to its highest level since 2003. Still, credit for the increase belongs less to any administration policy than to advanced drilling techniques, and the higher oil prices that make them worthwhile.

The Means Testing Temptation

Ross Kaminsky, The American Spectator
America's fiscal need for entitlement reform is pushing the discussion about Social Security inexorably toward "means testing," a policy both the left and the right have long avoided. Both sides realize that means testing, namely reducing or eliminating payments from the program to higher income senior citizens, would recast Social Security from its current perception by citizens as a retirement program to one of outright redistribution or welfare.

This Tax Season, The IRS May Be Feeling Your Pain

The agency faces a $600 million cut to its budget for the rest of the current fiscal year, if congressional Republicans have their way. The agency says such a large budget cut would hinder its tax-collection efforts, and that in turn could reduce revenues coming into the Treasury.

Congressman: U.S. Should Try Gitmo Detainees As Enemy Combatants

Earlier this week, President Obama announced that the United States would resume using military tribunals to try alleged terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. The move ends the president's two-year freeze on military trials at the detention facility. Obama also signed an executive order for the US to continue indefinite detentions of suspects without trial. Former army officer and Republican Congressman Allen West toured the Guantanamo camp on Monday. He shares his views on military tribunals and the handling of terrorism suspects with host Michel Martin.

U.S. Sees Stalemate Emerging in Libya

Levinson & Coker, Wall St. Journal
The U.S. believes Col. Moammar Gadhafi has solidified control in parts of Libya, creating a stalemate with rebels and raising the stakes in the Obama administration's internal debate about whether to take military action to help the opposition, officials said.Pro-regime forces pressed into the rebel-held city of Zawiya, near the capital, and appeared to have halted the opposition's momentum to the east in fighting Tuesday.

Newt Gingrich Seems To Blame Past Personal Lapses On Patriotism

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich partly blamed his passionate work on behalf for the country for his past personal indiscretions. It's a novel and creative explanation meant to appeal to the social conservatives, including born-again Christians, so important in Republican primaries and caucuses.
