Time to Break Addiction to Foreign Oil

Derrick Jackson, Boston Globe
UNREST CONTINUES to spread, from the Middle East to the Middle West to . . . the gas pump. The democracy uprisings against repressive regimes, many of which America propped up, has also fanned fears for the flow of oil. In response, Big Oil has jacked up its prices and gasoline is back up to $3.20 a gallon for unleaded in Massachusetts and is reportedly headed to $3.50 nationally. As the Obama administration tiptoes between popular protests and potentates who turn on our oil spigot, Americans are concerned about prices at the gas pump.

The Internet Helps Us Get Serious

Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal
I was talking the other day with a new member of the U.S. Senate, and conversation turned to what had surprised him most in his first months on Capitol Hill. He said it was the number of people who still don't seem to understand that we're in crisis, that if we don't move now on spending, it could do us in.I'm always surprised when I hear this, yet I've heard it a lot. "There's no sense of urgency up here."

Agencies responsible for vital services, such as national security, air traffic control and food safety inspection, would continue operations. But others ? those involving passports, student loans and other routine services ? will shut down unless Congress reaches a deal on federal spending.
