Egypt's President Mubarak left office today after weeks of protests, strikes and calls for his resignation. Commentator Hosam Aboul-Ela once caught a glimpse of the now-former president ? or, at least, of his motorcade. It reinforced the distance between the leader and his people.

The Messy Failure Of The Freedom Agenda

The Egyptian protesters who have gathered in the streets, calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down have gotten their wish. Commentator Jennifer Wiens argues that what we are seeing now in Egypt is democracy being built from the ground up. It is not, she says, a result of former President George W. Bush's agenda.

The 'Secular' Muslim Brotherhood

Andrew McCarthy, National Review
How fitting that it was Juma — Friday, the Islamic Sabbath day — that convinced Hosni Mubarak to end his 30-year reign as Egypt’s ruler. This was only hours after James Clapper, the U.S. director of national intelligence, told Congress that Mubarak’s main opposition, the Muslim Brotherhood, is “largely secular” in nature. Mr. Clapper was merely echoing the American media, taking pains to brand Egypt’s uprising as secular, democratic, and Islamist-free.

U.S. Representative Paul Ryan and director of the Congressional Budget Office Alice Rivlin proposed a new health care plan in November, claiming that it would reduce federal health care spending by 2030. Jeffrey H. Anderson of The Weekly Standard argues why the Ryan-Rivlin plan would work better than Obama's.
